The Newark Historical Renaissance Ride invites you to an evening with two leading women New Jersey artists on June 24th in Newark. Bisa Butler in  discussion her body of work in fiber arts and filmmaker Nefertite Nguvu who will present a screening & discussion of her documentary short "Newark, Art for the People" 

BISA BUTLER is an American fiber artist known for her quilted portraits and designs celebrating black life. She has exhibited at the Smithsonian Museum of American History, the Epcot Center, the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, and other venues.

NEFERTITE NGUVU is a writer, director, and producer and founder of the production company Hollywood Africans. Her multiple award winning first feature film, In the Morning , was shot in eight days.[ Shadow and Act said of In the Morning, “Nguvu crafts each relationship and character as its own poem, evoking a certain emotion that is elevated by the cinematography of renowned image-maker Arthur Jafa.” She created her short film, The Last Two Lovers at the End of the World with AT&T Hello Lab.

The tandem bike that wowed the crowd took home the Best Bike prize at the 2018 Seersucker Summer Social. The winner won a 7 day Caribbean hotel package. Congratulations to the winners!

A Few Reminders for Ride Day

Hydrate (water will also be provided) but be certain to hydrate before the ride.

Registration Check-in / Armband Pickup starts promptly at 9:00 AM. Bring ID Get there a little early or be there on time so that everyone is checked in on time so you'll have  enough time to stash your swag bag before the ride starts. 

At registration Earlybird Pre-Registered Riders will be given a ticket, which we will select a winner for a 7-10 night accommodations from Elite Island Resorts

Ride Guide Review After check in, pin your armband and take a few minutes to review your Ride Guide to become familiar with the route and stops.  The ride will be guided, and you'll be accompanied by Ride Marshals, but it's helpful to know what you'll be seeing.

Ride Marshals and Volunteers will have yellow armbands - seek them out for any questions or guidance during the ride. There are a few points on the ride where we will walk our bikes due to pitch/inclines. 

Bring your bike lock You will want to secure you bike after the ride. Bike racks will be positioned at the library.

There will be live music and light refreshments for the After Social at Newark Library. You may also purchase NHRR merchandise there. 

We will be selecting Best Dressed Man and Woman, Best Beard/Mustache, Best Bike and we are announcing the winner of the Elite Island Resort package. 

And finally, be photo ready! There will be lots of photo opportunities, be ready and SMILE!  Enjoy taking photos and use hashtags: #RENAISSANCERIDE #BIKENEWARK #LOVENEWARK
